AeroEngine Supply Chain
With the production ramp up for new aircraft engines the supply chain faces challenges. Engine OEMs must respond quickly to changing production schedules. This becomes more difficult with diverse vendors that can span the globe. Another challenge is the incorporation of new materials to enhance engine performance but are more difficult to inspect. We will discuss these challenges and more with a focus on solutions for the supply chain.

  • Session Number:  104
  • Tuesday, November 06, 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM
  • Tracks:
We gather a panel of experts to drill down into aviation in the Asia Pacific region and look at where the MRO industry is heading. With less maintenance requirements on newer generation aircraft, how does traditional MRO evolve to cater for it and what are the panelists views on future maintenance activity in the region? How do the panel see the issue of overall capacity vs. demand in this “portable” industry? There has been an emergence of ‘Aviation Hubs’ - what is the value and how do they affect predictions for maintenance activity? What trends have been found and what lessons learnt from the regional aviation and MRO business clusters? What critical success factors can be found in the ‘Best Practice’ Airline MRO business models?

How is the shortage of engineers and mechanics affecting the industry, and what are the solutions? What strategies could be employed to make the industry more attractive for younger individuals and elicit better job loyalty? How do we ensure that the experienced instructors can impart their technical training and knowledge so there is not ‘skill loss’ as we move to the next generation of workers? What skills will they need? If there really is ‘an abundance of labour’ in Eastern Europe and the Middle East? Are that workforce fluid and ready to move? How do we adapt to changing work landscape in areas such as Engineering that are now being affected by automation? Developing a sustainable workforce for the future

Additive Manufacturing – Great Potential and Challenges
It seems accepted that 3D printing will accelerate the growth of the aerospace industry. IT allows greater design flexibility and will help lower the cost of manufacturing thus improving competitiveness. This opens the opportunity in Asia for experimentation. Likely in metal part fabrication and for the tooling industry. But challenges remain. The process is relatively new, and the industry requires the creation of certifiable parts. Parts that have been created by traditional methods for decades. As such specs and standards are only now being created. We will take a look at the best the technology has to offer and work on the impediment the certification challenge creates for small solution providers.

Supply Disruption Risks - the Art and Skill of Mitigation
No matter how precise the planning there is always the risk the supply chain can be disrupted. These delays can result from political pressures, climate and natural disasters, or even such things as getting demand projections wrong or changes in a products design etc. What can manufacturers do to mitigate these disruptions both in the short and the long term? How important is it for the OEM to truly understand its supplier’s business and build a resolute and long-term relationship, especially in Asia?

Mature Engine Solutions: Cost Optimisation for an Ageing Fleet
As the focus of OEMs begins to gravitate towards newer engines, how can MROs capitalise on the buoyant aftermarket and drive a competitive offer for mature phase engine types? What service offerings are available to non-OEM suppliers? Is there a role for the independent MRO model in today’s engine maintenance market? What adaptive strategies can airlines utilise to minimise maintenance costs for legacy engines? With oil prices slowly returning to higher levels, how will airlines operating older fleets adapt and what are the implications for widely deployed platforms such as CFM56 and V2500?

Considerations and Challenges for Next Gen Engine MRO
With the world’s largest order backlog, one heavily comprised of new engine types, APAC’s engine shops of 2028 could be a decidedly different landscape – what impact will new engine technologies and materials (e.g. fan blades, airfoil designs, advanced cooling systems) have on the repair skills MRO engineers require? How will these emerging technologies influence approaches to maintenance scheduling? What new repair processes for cost-effective MRO should the aftermarket look to invest in, and how can they ensure close cooperation alongside OEMs in developing approaches to NG engine maintenance?

The Lessors Panel
  • Session Number:  112
  • Thursday, November 08, 9:00 AM - 9:45 AM
  • Tracks:
Aircraft and engine leasing is a pervasive model adopted by airlines and influences the MRO market. Singapore has developed as the leasing hub in Asia-Pacific because of its financial hub, MRO technical expertise and tax environment. What trends should we look out for and where do the challenges lie? If the lessors insist that assets are maintained only by FAA and/or EASA approved MROs of their choice, how could this impact MRO growth? What suggestions or modifications to this might the lessors consider to mutually benefit all stakeholders? How can end of life/end of lease cost management be improved? What is the role of the lessors in this region? Hear key insight from the lessors as they let you know what on their agenda and what challenges they see on the horizon.
